Do you agree these vintage nesting canisters are a throwback to the 70’s? Picked up for $5, I knew they screamed for a makeover.

If you’re a regular reader of my blog, you’ll know that I love everything nautical. Now that summer is here, it is more in style than ever. Here’s the E-Z tutorial of the makeover:

Paint each box with chalky finish paint in three ocean/beach colors. Print out three nautical designs. I found these images on The Graphics Fairy. Print them onto freezer paper — in reverse. Some printers have a reverse option. Since mine does not, I downloaded the images into my Silhouette library, where I could easily re-size and reverse them. Once printed, tape each design to one of the boxes. With a large spoon, firmly rub the back of the paper to transfer the image.

Here are the three nesting boxes with their respective designs. The images transferred perfectly.

If desired, distress the edges of the boxes and lids using sandpaper. To add an extra nautical touch, adhere twine around the lid edges using decoupage or white glue.

Hold twine in place for a few seconds as you wrap the twine around each side.

The makeover is complete. These nautical canisters are now ready to be used for beach decor and storage on your outdoor patio table, mantel or countertop.

They can even hold napkins, straws and cutlery for your next sailing get-together on your boat!
