School’s in Session

How is it that our kids grow up so quickly? One day, it’s their first day of elementary school, and the next, you’re moving them into their college dorm. Yes, it happens that fast–or so it seems.

Were you surprised to find out how small the dorms room are? There isn’t much space for extra furniture or much-needed storage. However, you’ll probably be able to squeeze a narrow nightstand in, which happens to be painted in their school colors!

Starting with this old nightstand, I sketched out my idea for this makeover.

First, paint the entire piece in a base color.

Mark off straight lines with painter’s tape, and use second and third colors for stripes.

Paint one or two coats in between tape, and pull tape off while paint is still wet for crisp lines.

Using number stencils, paint future graduation year on top of nightstand.

Cover inside back area and inside drawer with coordinating scrapbook paper.

Varnish entire piece and stand back to admire your new nightstand ready to move into your child’s new dorm room.

I couldn’t decide on the right knob, so one photo shows the original wooden drawer knob, and this one shows a repurposed faucet knob. Which do you like?

And, of course, shot glasses not included!

I’m also painting a matching mirror and message board, so check back soon for the tutorial.

  1. I like the faucet knob, so much fun! And I also wanted to mention that the Wednesday “To Grandma’s House We Go” link party just started over at grandmashousediy.com and I thought you might be interested in joining it, thanks!

  2. Very fun makeover, Doreen–so unique and special for your new college student. I’m partial to the faucet knob, myself. Thanks for sharing your project with us at Vintage Charm!
